"Ook, ook"

"Ook" (look) is probably Nathan's most frequently used word by far. Whenever James and I start doing something in the kitchen, Nathan will get all excited and start yelling "ook, ook" while he runs to grab his green chair from the back room. He wants to see what we're doing up on the counter, and used to rely on us to carry him around (endless requests of "bop/抱"). But now he's realized that he can pretty much get to any counter he wants by climbing onto his chair. He's very much enjoying this new found independence, and would be busy moving his chair around to get in on the latest "action". He likes to watch us cook, and occasionally we let him participate by stiring the paster, or adding the salt. (Even though he's got his own kitchen set the real stove is still 100x more attractive). He's pretty good about not touching the hot pots, but still wants to touch all the other forbidden items on the counter so we have to keep a constant eye one him. (I'm always paranoid that he'll get his hands on a kitchen knife).

Here's a picture of Nathan feeding our beta fish (which has been with us for over a year now, amazingly!) Nathan can't say fish yet, but he's invented his own sign for it: rub fingers together (which is what he's doing right here to drop the fish food in the bowl).

Hi Alice! Came across your blog linked through elchang's blog. I really enjoyed reading about your experiences with Nathan, they are quite similar to mine with Katie. Katie also loves helping out in the kitchen, like putting her frozen peas in a bowl or throwing pasta into the boiling water (which totally freaks me out, I don't want her to burn herself!). She doesn't feed our fish yet but does love watering the houseplants. It's so fun watching them want to copy us adults, isn't it? If you're ever bored, you can check out my blog - ktsmama.blogspot.com. Also saw you're expecting your second, a huge congrats! Very exciting news. Hope the pregnancy goes very smoothly. Nathan will be a very good big brother! :)
